Snowbirds enjoying a beach destination during winter

What is Snowbird insurance?

Snowbird travel insurance is a specialized form of coverage designed for Canadians who spend an extended period living or vacationing in warmer destinations, typically in the U.S. or other countries. While commonly used for winter getaways, these plans provide protection year-round for any long-term stay abroad. Coverage includes emergency medical expenses and other essential benefits — giving you peace of mind no matter when you travel.

  • Snowbird insurance typically covers a range of services and situations, ensuring you're well-protected while you're outside of Canada. This includes emergency medical care, hospitalization, and doctor visits. Additionally, it may cover trip cancellations, interruptions, lost baggage, and certain trip delays. The exact coverage depends on the plan you choose, but in general, it’s designed to provide comprehensive protection to address the needs of snowbirds traveling abroad for extended periods.
  • If you have a pre-existing medical condition, finding the right travel insurance can be challenging, but we make it easier. Our snowbird plans offer coverage for many pre-existing conditions as long as they meet stability requirements. That means if your condition has been well-managed for a certain period before your trip, you can be covered for emergency medical treatment related to it. You’ll have the protection you need to travel worry-free.
  • Yes, many Snowbird insurance plans provide coverage for trips to multiple destinations, making them ideal for snowbirds who travel to different countries or regions during their extended stay. Whether you’re planning to visit friends and family in multiple locations or explore different countries during your trip, you can rest easy knowing that your travel insurance will cover you as you move between destinations.
  • If you travel frequently, a multi-trip plan offers seamless protection without the hassle of purchasing insurance for every journey. Ideal for snowbirds and frequent travelers, these plans cover multiple trips within a set period, ensuring you're protected whether you're heading home for the holidays or taking short getaways. With flexible coverage options and cost savings compared to single-trip policies, a multi-trip plan provides convenience, affordability, and peace of mind—so you can focus on enjoying your travels.
  • If you need medical assistance while traveling abroad, you can rest assured knowing you’ll have support. Should a medical emergency arise, simply contact the provider listed on your insurance policy. They will guide you through the process of receiving the care you need, whether that’s arranging for medical treatment or emergency transportation. Their 24/7 assistance team is always ready to help you, wherever you are. If you’re unsure about who to contact, our team is happy to provide guidance on the right steps to take for your specific plan.
  • To file a claim, you’ll need to follow the steps outlined in the documents sent to you when you purchase your travel insurance. These documents will provide you with the necessary contact information and detailed instructions on how to proceed with your claim. Should you have any questions or need help along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to make sure you have the right details and guidance to ensure your claim process goes smoothly.
  • Trip interruption and cancellation coverage is available as an optional add-on to your Snowbird insurance policy. If you choose to add this coverage, you’ll be protected in case you need to cancel or shorten your trip due to a covered reason, such as illness or an emergency. This coverage can reimburse you for non-refundable expenses, including flights, accommodation, and travel arrangements. Be sure to check the details of your selected plan to confirm what’s included in the add-on and understand the specific terms and conditions for coverage.
  • Yes, you can extend your travel insurance if your trip goes longer than planned. Life happens, and if you need more coverage, we make it easy to adjust your policy. You’ll just need to contact us before your original policy expires, and we’ll help you extend your coverage for the additional time. Whether you’ve extended your vacation, need more time for a family visit, or your business trip has been extended, we’ve got your back. We understand that flexibility is important when it comes to travel, and we’re here to ensure you stay protected for the entire duration of your trip. Please note: your provincial health coverage must remain in place for your travel insurance to be extended.
  • In most cases, you must purchase Snowbird insurance before leaving Canada to ensure you’re fully covered during your travels. However, some providers may allow you to purchase a policy even after departure, though coverage may be limited or not apply to certain situations like pre-existing conditions. It's important to contact us directly and speak with one of our agents to understand the options available to you if you’re looking to purchase insurance after you've already left the country.
